Botox
Botox, short for Botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein used in cosmetic and medical treatments. It is most widely known for its ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, but it also has several other therapeutic applications. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing specific muscles or blocking certain nerves.
How Botox Works
Botox is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected in small, controlled amounts, it blocks the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction. This results in temporary muscle relaxation, which can smooth out wrinkles or alleviate certain medical conditions.
History
- 2002: The FDA approved Botox for cosmetic use to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. This approval triggered the widespread adoption of Botox for cosmetic purposes.
- 2004: Botox received FDA approval for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), expanding its medical uses beyond neuromuscular conditions.
- 2013: The FDA approved Botox for the treatment of crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes), further cementing its role in cosmetic dermatology.
- Today: Botox becoming a cornerstone of aesthetic medicine.
